Why your pooch needs it.

There’s many benefits to grooming. It promotes general health and wellbeing – controls and prevents diseases. And, an attractive, well kept dog is a sure sign of a responsible owner. Regular grooming keeps coats in good condition – so they are easier to maintain. You’ll not only minimise doggy smells, your pup will become more trusting and socialable.

Our tips for tails

Here’s how to health check your best friend – please start at the head and work down to avoid any possibility of cross contamination.

Know your dog

Always talk to your vet for a diagnosis of your pets’ health and medical condition – remembering to keep a look-out for common problems which include:

Fleas
Under groomed pets are more susceptible to fleas. They can harbour dangerous diseases in turn can present a health risk to pet and owner. Adult fleas are small and brown – relatively easy to see with the naked eye. Brush your pet with a Flea comb checking thinly-haired areas of your dog like abdomen or the inside of their hindquarters.

Treating fleas
Wash your dog with anti-flea shampoo. This will kill the fleas but not the eggs. A flea treatment after grooming will do the job .

Ticks
Should be removed by screwing out anticlockwise! Ticks start white in colour then go brown/black, and can carry Lymes disease. Some flea treatments also prevent ticks.

Mites & lice
light brown in colour and mostly found on tail and ears. Causes redness, bald patches and scratching.

Mange
There are two types caused by mites – one is contagious and one not. Spreads very quickly so please consult your vet as soon as possible.

Dog law
As a responsible dog owner please be aware of the law. All dogs should be vaccinated & micro chipped or tattooed. The dangerous dogs act 1991 prohibits the ownership of certain types of dogs, unless they are exempted on the Index of Exempt Dogs. It is a criminal offence to allow any dog (i.e. of any breed or type) to be dangerously out of control in a public place or a place where it is not allowed..
