From the Stage to the Cutting Room Floor

Why I’ve swopped my acting passion for my love of dogs

I love dogs. Always have. They’re my soul mate. Best friends. Someone you can always turn to, depend on and share fun times with.

So, when it came to the scary step of changing career in my fifties after a life time on the stage, it had to be something to do with dogs. Not just dog walking (I already do that) or house-sitting (love doing that) but something for their health and well-being. After all, they need someone to take care of them, give them a voice, look into their eyes and see what they need.

So, I’ve taken the (very) scary step of retraining. Challenging myself in ways I never thought possible. And, qualifying as a Professional Dog Groomer. Every journey starts with a few small steps but these were huge, giant leaps – that I’ve enjoyed, feared and followed with a passion.

The result is Groomalicious. I hope you enjoy our dashing tails.

Home from Home

Familiar surroundings help make us feel secure. It’s just the same for your dog. A salon can be a noisy, stressful environment so home grooming (your place or mine) is a wonderful alternative.

It allows puppies to gain confidence and old timers to, well, take their time. Each dog has my undivided attention with no distractions from other dogs or busy phones. I like to build a relationship with my clients so they are really understood, pampered and genuinely loved in my care.

Mi casa es su casa, so if you choose to come to my home your dog will never be caged or left unattended. Simple fact is I’ll just have to cuddle or play with your four-legged friend until you call to collect.

England’s Little Winner

Florence lifted my heart this morning. Street dog rescued from Montenegro who was proudly wearing her England flag when I arrived to groom. Very newly homed & seems to have settled in amazingly well after only a week. She showed such trust with her owner and I on a first foray intro grooming – it must have been a whole new experience for the little love. She was a little star.

It doesn’t matter where you come from, care, understanding and love are the mainstay of life. Which I know Florence will get in abundance at her new home.

Have table, will travel

Groomalicious is a relatively new but perfectly formed business. The whole idea is built on my love of dogs and a belief in doing things properly – which is why I’m trained to OCN Level 3 in Dog Grooming.

I’ve chosen to groom at your home or mine because I believe it is great for your four-legged friend. As a mobile home groomer, I am fully equipped to groom your dog in your home or mine. With the freedom and flexibility to be mobile, I come with everything necessary to groom your dog to a professional standard. All I need is a well lit space to pop-up my grooming table, a socket to plug into and a bathroom of some sorts to bath them in where required. Your dog gets the full treatment without the palaver or inconvenience of travelling to a salon.

During the pandemic grooming is permitted for Animal Welfare. Of course, we take great care in your home, following Government guidelines and best practice for your safety. If you prefer, you can drop your dog off with me just as you would at a salon.

The Man with the Pants on

Such wonderful memories this time of year of Chester, The Man With the Pants On, alias Buster Keaton.

He was the first Staffie I fell in love with. Like so many of our favourite friends, he went by many names. Wonderful coat markings gave him the appearance of a mighty weightlifter from an old fashioned fairground cartoon. Black soulful eyes gave him the spirit of Buster Keaton, perhaps the reason why this little chap was just as funny. No longer with us but, I always smile when thinking of him. Love and happiness my dear Chester.

Only ten squares to go

I spent many years working at The Globe theatre on London’s South Bank. One year, we were the first all female company. During the long (and sometimes boring technical rehearsals) we spent many an hour knitting squares to make blankets for various babies expected by members of the company. Much loved gifts for on-stage and off-stage members. To this day, I carry-on square making as it is the only thing I can knit!

My first solo blanket was for Sunshine (pictured) a couple of winters back. She loved the blanket so much it is now shredded. With lockdown upon us I’m cracking on with a replacement – only 10 more squares to go and a new blanket will be yours my friend.

Bright Eyes

People often ask what makes a health dog. The simple answer is the signs are everywhere.

We love being close to our four-legged friends and they need your care and attention. When your dog is used to being handled, they are easier to be around and looked after. Grooming helps makes dogs more sociable and easier to treat at the vets. They are also safer companions – which is why grooming is an excellent way to build confidence in your pet. While you’re thinking about it, here’s a few checks you can do at home.

Nose
Should be wet or damp to the touch

Ears
Should be free from discharge & smells. If ears smell of pear drops contact your vet

Feet
We want nice smooth pads and all claws intact. Lookout for splits and cracks

Teeth
Should be firm and clean. Try pressing down firmly on a tooth and release – the gum colour should pop back to pink

Bottom
Free from unusually bad smells and any discharge

Eyes
Have a look to see if they are bright & clear

Skin
Check for redness, cracking, baldness, sores and abrasions.

Above all else, please be vigilant. If you spot anything unusual or a change in behaviour talk to your vet.

Mucky Pups Rule

My Brother loves his Lottie but, she does test his patience. There’s nothing more she loves that running wild, tracking down banana skins and diving into deep dark puddles.

Beautiful eyes and gorgeous coat but, you have to see the shedding to believe it. He’s even bought a robot vacuum to deal with the constant tumble weed of dog hairs around his home. Thankfully his spirits have been raised now his sister’s a qualified dog groomer.

Like many short haired breeds, labs need a…..
